The Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.3 million in college scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors. The "Most Valuable Student," Eagle Scout, and Girl Scout Gold Award scholarships are open to any graduating high school senior. Legacy Awards and Emergency Educational Fund Grants are available only to children of Elks. The application process and deadlines vary for each of the programs. All applications, except for the scouting scholarships, must go through a local Elks Lodge before reaching the Elks National Foundation office. Contact your high school counselor or your local Elks Lodge for more information .
Student Recognition
The Cozad Elks Lodge recognizes students from area schools for their achievements and leadership qualities. Elk's Student of the Month nominees demonstrate appreciation and respect towards teachers, coaches, students, and their school work. They are model students who show pride for their school, help whenever it is needed, and always demonstrate positive qualities. The Elks honor these student nominees in May with a recognition dinner.
Shadow Day--Photo Gallery 2008
The Cozad Elks Lodge holds an annual "Shadow Day" each spring. Cozad Middle School students work alongside municipal officials for a half day learning about their various responsibilities. The event also features a tour of all city facilities and a noon luncheon at the Elks. Students are chosen with the help of the students' teachers and counselor.
Flag Day
Patriotism has characterized the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America since the early days of the organization.
In 1907, the BPO Elks Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues.
The Cozad Elks observes Flag Day annually. The Cozad Does helps with the ceremony. All Elks members and community members are invited to attend the ceremony.
Drug Awareness
Each year the Elks National Drug Awareness Program prints and distributes millions of pieces of educational literature to students, parents, teachers and community members. It also sponsors essay and poster contests for youth. The Cozad Elks hands out the Drug Awareness material during our annual Hay Day celebration.
Hoop Shoot
The Elks Hoop Shoot is a national program with more than 3 million participants each year. The program begins at the local level, with winners advancing through district, state, regional and national competition. Six national champions are crowned--one boy and one girl in each of the three age categories. The top girl and boy shooters are awarded the Getty Powell Award and are invited to attend the Elks National Convention. The Cozad Elks Lodge holds its local Hoop Shoot in January each year.
Soccer Shoot
The Elks Soccer Shoot program is a program under the Grand Lodge Youth Activities Committee. This program is designed to capitalize on this sporting event to help keep our youth focused and away from undesirable activities. Winners progress through Lodge, District, State and Regional Contests up to the National Finals. The Cozad Soccer Shoot is held on a Saturday in the fall at the soccer field.
Veteran's Activities
The Cozad Elks Lodge is proud of all their Veteran members and Veteran community members. To say thank you, the Elks Lodge serves those Veterans that are living at the care home hamburger baskets. This is a great time to get to visit those who served our country.
Gloves for Vets
Elks help thousands of veterans yearly by donating gloves for wheelchair assisted veterans and craft supplies for rehabilitation. These are supplied by donated hides. The Cozad Elks Lodge collects hides during deer season. All hides can be dropped off at the trailer at the Cozad Elks Lodge.
Trick-or-Treat (Halloween)
Elk Officers will serve trick-or-treaters hot dogs and pop on the evening of Halloween. Officers will also use this time to pass out drug awareness material to the youth of Cozad.
